Apparently, Paul Darrow, son of renown attorney Clarence Darrow, attended Dartmouth College in 1904. While Paul was a student, the horse he was riding kicked a young boy resulting in the boy’s death. He then sent the boy’s mother a letter promising help from the Darrow family should they ever need it. Twenty three years later, Clarence Darrow was at Dartmouth giving a lecture regarding his opposition to capital punishment and the mother approached him for help. Her nephew, John Winters had been convicted of the murder of Cecelia Gullivan. Cecelia was residing at 22 Clough Ave at the time of the murder.
Darrow was known for taking on difficult cases. He had represented John Scopes in Tennessee when he was accused of violating the state’s anti-evolution law. He also defended Leopold and Loeb who were accused of murdering a 14 year old boy for the “thrill” of it. There were many more cases that Darrow took on, mostly in his desire to end capital punishment. And, now he was headed to Montpelier to defend John Winters against rape and murder charges. John’s original attorney was Fred Bicknell also from Windsor and he welcomed the assistance of Clarence Darrow. The courtroom was packed to standing room only capacity. Bicknell presented the opening arguments and the trial proceeded with several challenges to the evidence. Darrow’s closing arguments focused on the origin of certain bloodstains on the accused coat and he was able to cast enough doubt about the way the evidence was omitted and handled that eventually Winters was convicted, but sentenced to life in prison rather than death by electrocution.
